And About That Time …
Posted by Chuck under Updates
Allyson got to the Internet cafe in Shashemene and was able to do a couple of things before succumbing to what I’ve come to refer to as AGD (African Gastrointestinal Distress). I’ve only been there once, but it finally hit me on the day I was flying home. So I understand what she’s going through. And still the fleas persist. She writes:
Have put flea powder and flea spray all over my room and bed. They woke me up about 5 times last night chewing on me. I really thought I was going to lose it.
But she’s hanging in there. Word is that they are beginning to make a real dent in the malnutrition wave that was caused by a horrible spring drought, which happened just as world food prices were spiking. Allyson saw the picture of the feeding center where she worked, which was shot on Sept. 3, about a week before she got there, and said she hasn’t seen lines that long since she arrived. Good news.
And she is very appreciative of all the nice comments all of you have left on the blog. In fact, she posted her own comment on the “Fleas” post, just to tell all of you thanks. Check it out.

Fleas suck!! They are truly vile and evil creatures. Might be one good reason to shave your legs, since otherwise you imagine you feel them crawling around through your leg hair whether or not they really are.(Admittedly more of an issue for some of us than others.)
I think putting up with flea-infested living quarters rates special “above and beyond” recognition - some kind of leaf cluster thingy around your medal for extraordinarily meritorious service to humanity or something. Maybe it will at least put a little extra shine on your halo in The Great Beyond. You go, girl. May the Lord bless you and keep you.

It’s like you are getting afflicted with all of my specialties–bugs and enteric diseases. Good luck with both! I recommend 100% deet on you or permethrin on your clothes for the fleas, and well, just a lot of rest and some rehydration for the GI part. Definitely keep an eye on it. Great to keep up to date with your work, sounds like you are doing amazing work.

Dang, how annoying that these nasty pests have gotten worse. I hate them for you, but know you’re tuff enough to make it through.
We miss you so much Allyson!!!! And, thanks for your note - it was good to hear from you.
XOXO, Birgit
